Mad Max: Fury Road Trailer Deconstruction

Mad Max: Fury Road

The trailer can be seen here:

Sound

Many different, contrasting pieces of music are used throughout the trailer to create an atmosphere of chaos and mayhem. The first thing we hear is the dialogue "My world is fire and blood" accompanied by both a low hum and a high pitched ringing noise, for a shot on the front of a car driving down a road.

To set the context of a dystopian society, newscasters are heard talking about how oil is needed, and there are a series of different voices saying "water" clipped together to highlight the shortage problem. A very long, suspenseful ringing is heard before it's cut out by the noise of cars crashing and bursting into flames. Cars and crashes are very common features of action movies.

There is constant narration giving away small hints about the world they live in, such as "everybody's gone out of their mind" but without revealing what's actually happened to them. This is accompanied by a shot of one of the war boys sacrificing himself.

There is also a perpetual ringing sound heard throughout, representing the white noise in your ears after a loud sound such as the many explosions seen in the trailer. Music that sounds similar to very grand circus or fairground music then begins to play, which is contrapuntal as the action on screen is very aggressive and dangerous. This then fades into a noise that almost sounds like a blazing fire as the woman begins to scream, which fits with the title that's shown following this which is covered in flames.

One of the men is then seen yelling "What a day, what a lovely day!" which shows how what's going on is normal for them and while it may seem extreme for us, it's an average day for them.

A very dramatic, famous classical piece of music is then played as many shots are seen together accompanied by the noises of engines revving and gunshots; also typical motifs of action films. The classical music being played alongside these noises makes the scene very chaotic and excites the audience.

Editing

Throughout the trailer, an orange tone is used to make the setting look dry and deserted, which represents the drought the population is suffering.

Rather than showing any specific narratives from within the film, the trailer consists of many different action shots edited together in a random order. This creates chaos and excitement and concretes the genre as being an action movie.

A shot of the main character is shown which then very quickly flashes into a shot of the supposed leader of the bad guys which shows him giving a salute before even more madness ensues.

The line "everybody's gone out of their mind" is shown over a black screen before shots of people acting crazily quickly edited together back up this claim. Titles are edited in using fade to black transitions between slow shots to increase the tension and imply a rebellion 'awaking' as someone lifts their head from the sand. Lots of shots of different, short action scenes are then shown in rapid succession. These are unrelated, but show many dramatic moments within the movie to attract an action-loving audience.

The shots then alternate between different frames in different locations and the titles, which consist of large, flaming text.

The shots then decrease in duration as the titles end and many shots are then edited together again which makes it feel extremely chaotic. Each shot is shown for only a second each, meaning people get a feel for just how action packed the film is without learning any spoilers, which is likely to attract a large audience.
