Unfriended - Trailer - Deconstruction

Unfriended, Theatrical Trailer Deconstruction

In the theatrical trailer for Unfriended there are common representations of a mystery thriller filmed that are conformed to. This is shown through things such as film lighting, sounds used, the characters used and different camera angles that are used.

Here there is typography which is building up suspense that is going to happen. The colour of typography is black on a grey background which are dull colours and show suspense reflecting the genre of the film. This typography that is shown within the first 30 seconds of the trailer is showing the viewer that something has happened or will happen throughout the trailer which will be shown to the viewer towards the end.

In these two photos above a teenage girl is shown which is conforming to common representations of thriller/mystery films because they are usually vulnerable and used throughout most films because they are portrayed in this way throughout all films and are usually shown as the ones to be victims. In these two shots there are camera angles that focus upon the same girl in two different angles one where she looks close up and happy and another camera angle is a further away shot of her looking more vulnerable and looks like she is a teenage victim lying on the floor.

The way that the trailer involves parts of a screen that makes the audience feel as though they are part of the conversation on the phone with the other person makes it seem more realistic. This will make the viewers feel like they are a part of it and have an impact upon the way they are feeling perhaps making them feel a bit more nervous and on edge because they are being involved.

In the trailer at this moment it is looking through Facebook comments on a video and the fact that it focuses and zooms in on 'waste' and 'life' gives a feel and sense to the audience that someone throughout this film will lose their life.

Here there is a reaction shot shown of this girl when she is on the skype call with her friends and it is showing how she looks confused about what is going on and it is showing to the audience that she looks concerned and this presents to the viewer that something bad could be about to happen.

At the end the typography and background for the title of the film is interesting because although the title says 'Unfriended' it doesn't give this sense through the image behind as that is usually the image shown when someone is friends with someone on a social media site. However there is aspects to the title that show it could have some mystery towards it is the fact that the background is black with a red friend icon behind the title showing that something isn't normal. The font used is sans serif which takes away the religious meaning behind it making it more realistic to the viewer.

Sound within this trailer starts off non - diegetic when there is up beat mood music at the beginning giving the impression of good things happening. This is also shown along with diegetic sound of people within the film at the beginning screaming and having fun. However this changes when there is focus upon the teenage girl that is shown as being vulnerable the music drops and turns more mellow when the titles come up saying 'but so do your mistakes.' There is diegetic sound made by a keyboard that is meant to be part of the trailer and it is adding to the effect of suspense as the keyboard is typing. Then when the girl is shown lying on the floor there is diegetic sound from another character within the film silently whispering 'whore' giving an impression to the audience that the girl that is on the floor has perhaps made mistakes that she will regret. After this there is then suspense sounds and music played just before the girl shoots herself in the head and there is a gunshot heard so that music is building up suspense for what happened. Whilst they are on the FaceTime call there is also suspense sounds and suspense music played at high pitch and very upbeat. There is also diegetic sounds of screaming heard which conform to common representations of this genre because it is a mystery the audience are still not clear on whilst the characters on the screen are screaming.
