Location Practical

Location - Shed

From the results of our survey, we could see that the location of a house was the most popular answer. However, as a movie trailer contains lots of scenes from different parts of the movies, we want to use a variety of settings within our trailer. An abandoned location was also reasonably popular, but as I don't have easy access to a suitable building, I got permission from my mum to use one of the sheds in our garden.

First of all, I had to clear out the contents of the shed as it was very cluttered.

I removed everything except the wheelbarrow as I thought this would look effective as mise-en-scene, and began to put fake blood on some of the walls.

I used a tube of liquid fake blood and flung it randomly towards the walls and windows to create a splattered effect. I also created handprints on the walls by covering my hand in fake blood. From the other shed, I got tools which i put on the floor and on the walls, sprayed with blood, and used a ladder as a shelf to put chemicals on. All these objects were to make the shed appear as some kind of torture room that may be seen in a deep web red room.

I edited all the photos on Photoshop CS5 to give them a horror film colouring effect. I duplicated the layer and desaturated the new one, and put it in one of three blending modes depending on what looked best (hard, vivid or linear light) and fiddled with the opacity until I was satisfied. I then added a layer with a dark grey colour and the blend mode Overlay to darken some of the shadows. Finally, I used a layer mask and the elliptical marquee tool to create darker edges on the pictures.

Overall, I am very pleased with the result and think that this could potentially be a good location to use in some shots in our trailer. It could be improved by maybe collecting relevant newspaper articles and spreading them around the room, and adding more blood to the walls as I had a limited supply at the time.
