Photoshop Task - Typography
We were given the task of using Photoshop to create typography for a film appropriate to our genre. As our theme is linked with the internet, I decided to make it linked to this while also conforming to conventions of typography within horror films. As we don't yet have a working title for our trailer, I used sample text of 'deep web'.First, I picked an appropriate font; I chose one that looked similar to the font used in coding programs. I made this plain which with a Gaussian blur of 2 pixel radius.
I then duplicated this layer twice, removing the blue and red channels from the other and the green and blue from the other.
I then moved the original layer 4 pixels to the right, and the green layer 4 pixels to the left. Together, the layers look like this with a glitch-y kind of effect.
Next, I duplicated the green layer twice and applied a Gaussian blur to both to create a glowing effect. The first layer had a radius of 10 pixels, and the second a radius of 30 pixels.
The text with these glow layers applied looks like this:
Next, I wanted to add the effect of scanlines over the text. To do this, I created a new black layer and used the filter gallery to apply a halftone line pattern. I then put this layer in the blending mode 'soft light', however this meant the lines only appeared outside the text and not within. To rectify this, I duplicated the layer and put it in the blend mode 'subtract'.
To create glitches within the text, I first created small selections over the text where I wanted the glitches to appear. Using these, I created a layer mask and used feather at a radius of two pixels.
The final step was to create a static effect around the text. I did this by creating a new black layer and using the 'add noise' function to create a glitch-y, static effect around the text. I then put this in the blend mode 'colour dodge'. The final product can be seen below:
Here is a screenshot of all the layers used in this typography:
Overall, I am very happy with the way the text came out as I think it is suitable to the horror genre while being linked to our theme of the deep web.
