Analysis of Discussion in our Focus Group
To further develop ideas for our trailer, we held a focus group of our peers within our target age range to discuss their thoughts and ideas. The footage of the focus group can be seen below:
The first question was concerned with the relevance of the dark web in today's society. They all agreed they'd heard of it, and that they knew the impact it was able to hold over their lives. The first point was the use of the dark web by terrorist organisations, allowing them to have easier communication with one another anonymously. We also discussed the impact of online trading services on the distribution of drugs, i.e. how anonymous marketplaces allow more accessibility, which may lead to more people doing drugs in general as they are easier to get a hold of.
The second question asked about their current interest about the topic. They seemed very interested, and what I think made it more interesting is that it's not a topic commonly covered within horror films, and so is a change from more usual themes such as serial killers. They were only able to name a couple of films surrounding the same ideas, Unfriended and Friend Request, suggesting that there's definitely a space in the market for internet based horror films.
We all agreed that these topics should definitely have more of a place in current discussion as one of my friends said the only reason she had heard of it was through me. Seeing as the internet is so normal within daily life, and things such as drugs are relevant to our age group, I definitely think there should be more exposure to the things that go on online and the group agreed with this. For the question regarding sound, the group agreed with our ideas that it would be most suitable to include a range of both diegetic and non-diegetic sounds, and mix them in ways that will make the score more intense.
Finally, there was a general consensus that while drugs seemed to be the most relevant within our age groups, the idea of a red room based film would be the most interesting to watch as not many people have heard of them and the idea of them is very shocking. Therefore, we think we will probably base our trailer on red rooms as we agree that there needs to be more awareness of what happens online, and there are many different routes we can take with this idea which gives us a lot of different opportunities while creating our trailer.
