Survey Analysis

Analysing our Survey

In order to gauge ideas and general interest for our film concept, we created a survey on Surveymonkey which can be found here. We included questions to see the audience's current knowledge about the deep web, and also questions about ideas we had for our trailer to see which people thought were most effective.

We started with basic questions, asking if people knew what the deep web was and seeing if they thought there should be more awareness/it's culturally relevant.

As you can see, the majority of people think there should be more awareness surrounding the criminal side of the internet, and almost everyone saw it as culturally relevant. This supports our cultural link surrounding cyber crime in modern society, and suggests that there would be a wide interest in a film like this.

We also had a question about the preferred genre for our film idea. The options were psychological, slasher, supernatural and other: 72 of our 78 respondents voted for psychological, however one person specified an option for 'other' with a mix of psychological and slasher, which is likely what we'll go for, as this allows us to incorporate slasher elements such as gore into a mainly psychologically based trailer.

Another question asked about suitable locations for our concept, as we were unsure which would be the most effective. The majority of votes were spread between a house and an abandoned location, however we also received several ideas for 'other' from people who would prefer a more professional setting, however as our target audience is 16-24 year olds, we think this may be unsuitable.

Another important question was about the type of sound would be most  effective with our film concept. We were deciding between the use of a non-diegetic, tense soundtrack typical of horror films, or purely diegetic noise, such as seen in The Blair Witch Project, to imply a greater sense of realism. Due to the mixed results we received, we will probably attempt to include a range of both.

Finally, one of the most important questions surrounds the themes we could base our film off on the deep web. We include what we felt were the most interesting ideas that would be both fun and interesting to learn about and create our trailer based on. The most popular was conspiracy theories, however our personal favourite is the idea of red rooms, which are likely the idea we will go with. We received one 'other' idea, which was Blackmail, which is an interesting concept that could easily be incorporated with the theme of red rooms.

Overall, I feel that the survey has been very useful in helping us decide our ideas, as we are able to see what is most of interest to our potential audience. It has provided us with some new ideas, such as the combination of different types of sound and elements of 2 separate sub genres within horror.
